The pun of this article is quite amusing! I believe it was a major shock that the pope would resign so suddenly. But I do believe in coincidence AND miracle/faith. I believe the lightning did strike there for a reason, for a greater effect. Lightning rarely strikes in the same place twice :O. - Tia Kraus
That is pretty weird, admittedly. I wonder how many times lightning normally hits/has hit the building in the past?
People's overall cosmological worldview of course affects how they see these kind of events. The different agencies that they perceive are the different actors on their cosmological stage, whether coincidence or divine action.
I think belief in miracles/deities doesn't necessarily preclude the conclusion that this is coincidence either. I asked some Catholic people about this and they just laughed and said it was weather. So clearly people with similarly overall faiths can have different conclusions about the same event.
There really will be only be significance of the lightning if you give it meaning. This could be a complete coincidence. Lightning is constantly striking the Earth all across the planet. People can interpret this the way they want
I find it very interesting ad kind of spooky that this happened after the Popes resignation. Like everything, peoples interpretations of events or happenings can be different. But really what are the odds of this happening right after the resignation? I guess we will have to wait and find out!
People will always choose to see signs in things that may just be coincidence. To me, this doesn't seem to be that miraculous, since lightning is attracted to metal poles, which St. Peter's has... Though I suppose it is a bit funny, or maybe mysterious, that these two events should happen on the same day. -Erica H
Remarkable how human beings are so predisposed toward recognizing--or even imposing--order upon chance & randomness. Is it a consequence of our cognitive 'hard-wiring'? Do we perceive (or create) agencies even where there are none??
The timing of this particular act of nature is very odd but for the idea of it being becuase a man (pope) steps down from his role is highly unlikely. I say unlikely becuase we do not have a definate answer. But the fact is, if someone knows the knowldege of lighting storms and studies the signs that there will be one, it is likely to capture this type of photos, and on a second note when a lighting bolt hits any object it is just moving to fast to see but it does hit twice. The human eye is seeing the bolt actually going back into the sky but our brains make it look like one time hitting.
