I studied quite a bit of linguistic phylogenetic relationships as an undergrad so this is really interesting to me. A lot about history and pre-history can be gleaned from the study of historical linguistic changes. It is true that thee phylogenetic theories of biology can be really usefully applied to languages. It's really exciting that this technique is being used to dig into something like Homer.
